Sediment Entrainment and Slump Blocks Limit Permafrost Riverbank Erosion
نویسندگان
چکیده
Climatic warming and permafrost thaw are predicted to increase Arctic riverbank erosion, threatening communities accelerating sediment, carbon nutrient cycling between rivers floodplains. Existing theory assumes that pore-ice sets erosion rates, but overpredicts observed rates by orders of magnitude. Here, we developed a simple model predicts more modest due sediment-entrainment limitation armoring slump blocks. Results show during times thaw-limited the river rapidly erodes undercuts its banks, consistent with previous work. However, overhanging banks generate blocks must erode sediment entrainment. Sediment entrainment can limit bank block producing seasonally averaged observations. Importantly, entrainment-limited does not depend on water temperature, indicating decadal may be less sensitive than previously.

Geodetic Mobile Survey Methods for Riverbank Erosion Observations
Rivers are relief features susceptible to change over time more than any other. Dynamic and intensity of those changes depend on a series of factors that have been a research topic for decades, all with the goal of predicting and/or preventing changes that have a negative effect on ecological and administrative systems alike. This is especially evident on big river systems. The topic of water c...
متن کاملMonitoring Riverbank Erosion in Mountain Catchments Using Terrestrial Laser Scanning
Sediment yield is a key factor in river basins management due to the various and adverse consequences that erosion and sediment transport in rivers may have on the environment. Although various contributions can be found in the literature about sediment yield modeling and bank erosion monitoring, the link between weather conditions, river flow rate and bank erosion remains scarcely known. Thus,...
متن کاملRolling and Lifting Probabilities for Sediment Entrainment
This study addresses the rolling and lifting probabilities for sediment entrainment by incorporating the probabilistic features of the turbulent fluctuation and bed grain geometry. The lognormally distributed instantaneous velocity and uniformly distributed initial grain position, along with a relation between lift coefficient and particle Reynolds number, are used to extend the theoretical for...

Sediment erosion not only reduces efficiency and life of hydropower turbines but also causes problems in operation and maintenance. Several factors are responsible for this erosion in hydro turbine components. This paper presents the sediment erosion types in hydraulic turbines and their components based upon an extensive literature review and the field observation at Cahua hydropower plant, Pe...
